My People Rambling Project Paddy Jordan Legans Terrace Born and bred, went to St Joseph’s St Michaels, and on to secondary in St Mel’s College, Longford Town In his youthful years he worked as a farm hand for couple of family’s, Sloweys, & Corrigan families, was only a gossan he tells me. That’s before he started in the Track in 1948, a Michael Powell & Brendan Reilly were working here at the time, I was only helping out doing odd bit of general work, cleaning looking after some greyhounds, used always be greyhounds on the grounds of the track, my homes back garden and the track are only separated by a fence. Was after the 1950’s he was entrusted to train dogs, never had as much luck with his dogs than he did with others, people trusted him to do a good job and the right thing, some eventually were shipped to England to race, but they were with good owners who looked after them, and when dogs racing days were over any owner he worked with rehomed them, great pets he says, greyhounds, they will chase anything that moves, a part form a ball one man said to him. The Town used to play the football on the grounds too, would have been nice if they had of stayed, would have helped all round. Some people he will never forget down through the years form young lads that used to go and help out to owners and foremen, John Mac Dermott owner, Tommy Leavy foreman, brother Stephen Leavy use to hang around, also hands dogs and Played football for Swansea. Tommy O’Brien use to hang around as a young lad, went onto star for the county in GAA as a great Goalkeeper so I’m told. Kevin Dempsey use to hang around to, Flaherty Brothers, Seamie O’Toole, from my own family Sylvia Mac Tiernan Now Donnelly, my Grandfather same name, Michael Croghan loved the track so he did, fond memories myself when I was young, & my Grandfathers friend Jim McQuaid also David MacTiernan, Bob Mac Tiernan, also Chairman now Ned Devlan, is always worth remembering people, even when they are long gone. Great nights here, specially derby night, but has died down a lot over the years nobody has the extra income to keep dogs or have a few little bets, reminds me of another good man, used to have great crack with was Tote manager Seamus Green, also Hacket brothers Patrick & Eddie, when they were young, Patrick still calls by for an auld chat. There is a bit of a folklore surrounding our Paddy Jordan, Dermott Morgan of Father Ted Fame, when he was a young lad use to frequent the track in town, and there is a Father Ted episode with a man that works in the track called yes Paddy Jordan, what are the chances of that happening, I Don’t know if there is any other Paddy Jordan that works on any other track, Paddy had his doubts or modesty. Paddy Jordan the man in control of the hare, the hare driver, for as long as he can remember, & may i add the most honest decent gentlest souls I ever met, left me with Do your best and do nobody any harm and don’t forget say a few prayers
Had the pleasure of meeting Derek Beahen in Inchicore today. I was in Dublin for some photographs, and traveling with Billy Beahen brother of Derek. Passed by his Recovery Place in Inchicore Dublin. We got chatting when I noticed amongst the cars, vintage toy cars, real vintage classic car, of which he tells me he has many. Also many many vintage radios from early 1920's onwards. 'I'm a hoarder, I love anything old, like that, sometimes people just bring me things like that as a thank you for helping them in some other way. like for example, I had another toy car vintage, was a green colour, a rare one, One guy was in collecting his car, and seen it and asked how much, I said a thousand, he said 800. I said no, I said 1000, then I said not for sale. Sometime later another gentleman walks in, sees the same classic pedal car. Wow he said, I use to have one of them as a kid, I cant believe I'm seeing it now. He came a couple of times and admired it also brought one time his grandson to show him what he use to play with. I really would love to have that really would, I said to him your really taking with it aren't you, I am indeed, take I said , how much, no money just take it, when your kind in the world it comes back to you. One morning a big package arrived, the signed deliverer was the same guy whom received the toy pedal vintage car. He had sent me an old record cabinet. He was a past high ranking Garda Official, as I said to you before, when you are fair and decent it comes back to you in kind'. Derek has also radios that were in many films, one was in In the name of the father, an old RIC Bike that was in an Ardal O'Hanlon movie. 'I like to help everybody, like when we are born, we are all the apple of parents eyes. but sometimes life can be cruel, and turn out not the way parents expect, but that doesn't make them all bad people, they are still that inside, even addicted drug users, I treat everybody with he same respect regardless'. We had a great chat that was only a few mins long, but felt like it was longer, but for other commitments I couldn't stay with him to chat anymore which I would have loved, but that's life, ill be in contact with him again and wish to get more of his story's and his own life story, but what a gentleman.
