Winnie Stokes
90years young. Parents from Longford whom did live the old traveller way. on the road in tents. Tom and Bridget MacDonagh. When in her early adult life of 19/20 married John Stokes. John passed away 'Lord rest him' only few years ago. They settled and lived in houses all there married life. When they came through the big snow in snow in 1947, they could survive anything, John said to the family. John was also smithy, in the old traveller culture, also went and fought in the World War. John was born on the road where Fire brigade is now, where once was a camp site. they had lived in Granard, for early part of their marriage, in the late 40;s going back and forth to Longford Town in 70's. Eventually settling down in Longford in 1982, where all the family had settled, themselves in Pauric Column Heights. they married in 1946. Had 14 children one sadly passed away. Winnie has many grand children 76, one sadly passed away at young age. 157 Great grand children, and not only that but also 9 great great grand children. wouldn't you wish it was your birthday with all them gifts coming your way. had a tough life, rearing her own, I asked her what is her secret to a good life. she said 'a glass of Murph's Guinness every weekend in Longford Town. Dear Mrs. Stokes...I do hope you have a wonderful birthday ...I remember when I lived in Templemichael Terrace and your family and other families were camped on the Blind Mans Walk....I have lived in London these past 53 years visiting Longford when possible and I never fail to walk down Templemichael and out the road towards the Bishops palace remembering the hard times there was then...once again Happy Birthday and God bless xxx
